The idea behind Circle of Success evolved as we were working on our “Wall of Fame” project a few years back.

And speaking of assignments …
Right away you’ll get a live assignment from an actual company that’s not only looking for new letters to test … but for new talented copywriters to recruit as freelance and staff writers as well.
You’ll work on that letter from start to finish over a three-month time-frame – after which a new one will be assigned. In all, you’ll be given eight “live” assignments over the course of your Circle of Success membership.
Your assignment selections will cover a broad spectrum from the direct-mail industry. For one three-month period you may work on a financial package. The next, you’ll take on a health and well-being assignment. After that, you’ll tackle a fundraising letter. Your next assignment may be a letter from AWAI or some other self-improvement mailer.
The objective here is four-fold …
First, we want to expose you to the most lucrative sectors of the direct-mail industry. Health, financial, fundraising and self-help are without question the biggest mailers in direct-response – and writers who’ve mastered and specialize in these areas are among the highest paid in our business. But you’ll also have an opportunity to work in the other major areas of the business as well: banking offers, business-to-business, catalog copy, magazine subscriptions and so on.
Second, we want to make sure you enter the market armed with the ability to write any package that comes your way. As you may know, the writing approach used to get a prospect to respond to a financial offer may not work as well for a fundraising letter – and vice versa. All great copywriters have an innate sense for what approach works for each market. You’ll gain that sense through your Circle of Success experience.
Third, we want you to complete the Circle of Success program with a solid portfolio of at least eight professional direct-response packages – consisting of at least one letter from each of the “big four” sectors: health, financial, fundraising and self-help. These are assignments you can show to marketers at Bootcamp – or forward to companies we know are looking for good, up-and-coming copywriters. (In fact, your Circle of Success website will contain spec assignments reserved exclusively for Circle of Success members, as well as a special link to AWAI’s DirectResponseJobs.com, where dozens of copywriting job postings are listed.)
Finally, by working in so many areas of direct mail, you’ll get a feel for which market best suits you, and you may decide to specialize. If financial packages interest you most, then you may choose to build a solid portfolio of financial letters by working exclusively on live financial assignments throughout the second year of your Circle of Success membership. Or, you may find fundraising to be more up your alley. Or self-help. Or health. The advantage here is that you’re likely to have much more success marketing yourself to prospective clients as a specialist rather than a generalist.
Of course, you may submit any of the “spec” assignments you complete to the client who provided it. And if they like what they see, they may choose to test it in the mail. If it does well, you’ll not only be paid for your work – but you’ll have your first of what we believe will be many direct-mail successes under your belt.
I can’t stress to you enough the value of this kind of “group learning” experience.
It’s how many of the publishing divisions at Agora Inc. – one of the country’s biggest financial and health publishers – operate today. Over the years they’ve learned it’s the best way to bring new writers up to speed very quickly.

It’s a skill you most definitely need to have to become a great copywriter …
Industry studies have shown that the letter you write has about five seconds to grab the prospect’s interest and make him want to read more. Otherwise, it’s going straight into the trash.
