Recently I worked with a pilates studio in Oregon. When I first hunted for their website using search engines, it didn’t show up anywhere.
So I took a look at their home page and immediately noticed two basic mistakes: It had only a few key phrases, and the key phrases that were there weren’t in the places where the engines could see them.
I tweaked the heading and subheadings and added a few keywords in the right places—simple changes anyone can make with just a little guidance.
Less than a month later, their home page had three #1 rankings, 13 top-10 rankings, and 19 top-20 rankings.
Search engines like Google and MSN tell us that providing high-quality content is the single most important thing for a website to do.
Part of that content is keywords and phrases that let visitors know they’re in the right place.

Case in Point …
Before they learned SEO, one of my clients spent a lot of money printing and mailing a very thick catalog. When I got involved, the company took a tiny fraction of the print catalog budget and put it into an SEO copywriting campaign.
They ended up with so many high rankings and so much branding that the sales department approached management and said, “We can’t handle all the requests that are coming into our shop. Will you please turn off the Internet so we don’t have to keep working so hard?”
Take a good, honest look at your website and ask yourself:
