Two Surefire Ways to Triple Your B2B Writing Income

Sure, you can make more money as a copywriter by putting your nose to the grindstone, pushing yourself to write faster, and working marathon hours. Assuming, of course, you don’t collapse from exhaustion! But that doesn’t seem like a lot of fun to me.

The good news is, there are other ways to boost your income without having to work harder and longer. Especially if you, like me, write for Business-to-Business (“B2B”) companies.

As an aside, one way to make more money is to write for B2B companies. Yes, I’m biased because I love writing for B2Bs, and I teach other copywriters how to tap this lucrative market. But I honestly believe that B2B is the best opportunity these days to launch a writing business and quickly build a great income.

So with that said, here are two ways to catapult your earnings as a B2B copywriter or content writer.

Tip #1. Get Repeat Business

A trainer from my early days as a sales rep once told me, “Getting a sale will make you money. Getting repeat business will make you rich.” How true.

In B2B copywriting, it’s even more true.

There’s nothing more frustrating than getting just one project from a company and never hearing from them again. You’ve invested all that time and energy in landing the client, doing research, and completing the work, only to make — what? — a few thousand dollars. (Or possibly even just a few hundred!)

On the other hand, having a regular client who gives you project after project, year after year, is nirvana. With each project you handle for that company, you get better and faster — and the writing becomes easier and more enjoyable. After a while, revision requests drop because the client knows and, presumably, loves your work.

Landing just one client like that can significantly boost your yearly income by 10, 20, or even 30 thousand dollars a year. I have two clients who are each worth more than $50,000 to me. Four or five clients like that and you’ve got a thriving business that can keep you happily typing for years.

How do you get repeat business? Here are a few tips:

  • Focus on landing B2B clients who have an ongoing need for copywriting.
  • Do an exceptional job on every project you handle.
  • When you finish a project, always ask the client, “What’s next?”
  • Give clients a great experience working with you. (Be friendly, return emails promptly, etc.)

Of all these tips, the last is the most important. Think about the experience clients have working with you? Can you make that experience better?

Tip #2. Become a Better B2B Writer

By far, the number one complaint I hear from marketing directors of B2B companies is, “There are a lot of copywriters out there, but it’s difficult to find a really good copywriter.”

That speaks volumes. Get better at what you do, and you’ll attract more and better-paying clients — and keep those clients coming back for more.

As a B2B copywriter, there are two ways to do this. One, improve your B2B writing skills. Two, improve your B2B project skills.

Let’s talk about writing skills. B2B companies are looking for writers who can explain their products and services accurately and persuasively, and write in a way that engages their target audiences. B2B companies sell to other businesses, so hype and emotionally-driven copy typically flops. The best style is clear, conversational, intelligent, and motivating.

No matter what kind of writing background you have, you can learn to master the “B2B writing” style.

Now, let’s talk about project skills. In B2B, there’s a wide range of projects you need to learn how to do well. Websites, email campaigns, ads, articles, case studies, white papers, and more. A client won’t hire you for a $5,000 white paper project if you don’t know how to write one. The good news is, you can learn. And if you already know how, you can become even better. And better.

Although I’m very comfortable with my expertise in all the B2B project types, every week I try to learn something new. Why? Because B2B companies are eager to hire “really good” copywriters, and I want to remain a member of that exclusive club!
