A Copywriting Fling that Turned Serious
AWAI Member Krista Magidson never expected her copywriting career to take off the way it has.
“I've been at home for nearly 14 years taking care of my family. Being a freelancer has helped me to have a career that is flexible, which I love,” says Krista. “But what started out as something that I thought would help me to earn enough money to help with my family's finances and keep my children out of daycare has turned into a job that I absolutely love.”
Krista, 42, has a full plate as a stay-at-home mom. So she has, by necessity, adopted a flexible schedule. She works when her kids are at school, in the evenings, or on weekends. That's a great illustration of how your writing business can adapt to fit your life situation.
But she's found she has plenty of time to work with her clients and pursue another career teaching meditation part-time, while making everybody happy.
“I feel strongly that it is my job to support and nurture my childrens' passions. My oldest daughter is an amazing musician and is auditioning for a prestigious music school and my youngest daughter is an incredible artist,” explains Krista. “My new career allows me to afford to give my children the 'little extras' that they need to succeed … an extra guitar lesson or artist's supplies, for example. It also allows me to nurture my clients success by way of getting them more clients and increasing their sales revenues. This feels really good.”
Krista works mostly with local clients, a stable group of five, providing web writing services mostly, including website copy, emails, ezines, marketing reports, and even social media consulting. She's also used her desktop publishing skills to create newsletters and brochures. Her niche is solo entrepreneurs and small businesses in professional services industries like accountants, real estate agents, and mortgage brokers.
Fairly new to copywriting – she's been an AWAI member for a year and a half – Krista found it hard to specialize. But web writing expert Nick Usborne, whom she worked with through his Copywriting 2.0 program and later personal coaching, convinced her it was the right way to go. He was also a great mentor in other ways.
“When you are a new copywriter, you have a tendency to think you're not good enough, not experienced enough. This mindset can really hold you back. Nick's first priority of business, at least with me, was help me to get over that,” Krista says. “The first week after I finished working with Nick, I doubled my rate, and got it. And with each client I am able to charge more.”
Krista has big plans for her business, hence the name Boutique Marketing Group (you can check out her website here: www.boutiquemarketinggroup.com). She'd like to hire other writers and marketers to work with her providing services.
That's a great way to maximize your money-making potential as a freelancer by offering more services to more clients – without increasing your workload.
Let us know how it's going, Krista. And in the meantime keep up the good work.

I think the site looks really good! And I love the way Krista presents herself and her message on the video. I'm disturbed, though, by the fact that when Krista's video ends, all sorts of other videos pop up that have nothing to do with her message, and some are a bit weird. Why is this happening? What's the technical glitch?
