Writing Grants for Fun and Profit
The voice on the telephone was clearly excited.
“WE GOT IT!” gushed Brother Russ. “I was blown away when I saw that check for $5,000!”
I got that call the first of December from my client in Denver, Colorado.
I had written a grant proposal in April for the Lord’s Daily Bread organization to secure funding for their “Rescue Mission on Wheels” program. When writing the grant, I had been sure to cite the great outcomes of the program. I even convinced them to change the name from “Meals on Wheels.” I think those two factors won them the grant money where past efforts had failed.
That same night, I received an email from Steve, the head of New Beginnings of Lake County, a church in Clermont, Florida. He let me know they’d been awarded a $5,000 grant from TD Bank to continue their work with the homeless.
Like the first grant, in my proposal, I had been sure to highlight all the success stories from this program. And, I think that’s what brought in the funding.
It is a great feeling to know that more homeless people will have a warm place to sleep tonight. Plus, I was offered the chance by both clients to write a federal grant for them. It’s an opportunity to do even more good.
Grant writing is a multimillion-dollar business. Competition for funding is fierce. Grant writers who understand copywriting, research, and targeting their audience have an edge.
And despite the bad economy, this field is still going strong and funding is still available to organizations in need.
There are over 100,000 private foundations in the U.S. and Canada. And, over 10,000 corporations generously give “in-kind” gifts as well as cash to worthy charities. Federal and state grants are also sources for major dollars for worthy causes.
Yes, we are in a recession, but people with money still want to make a difference in their community. And, grant writers help them find worthy causes to do just that.
I love my work. This is a great home-based business. My wife and I moved to an active retirement community recently. I have time to attend club meetings, play games, develop new friendships, enjoy being with my family, AND work with worthy organizations to secure funding for their work in the community.
