My Fridge Says Nice Things to Me

Christina Gillick here, guest editor of The Writer's Life this week.

I have the nicest refrigerator in the world. Every day, at least 10 times a day, it says the nicest things to me.

You’re probably wondering how on earth my fridge speaks …

A few weeks ago, right after I watched the movie that changed my writer’s life path forever, I noticed a business card magnet on my fridge. I had been reading this magnet 20+ times each day for months, but not really caring or thinking about it. It told me to “buy water filters, pool filters, spa filters, and more” from my local filter company.

But a few weeks ago, something in my head clicked and I thought, "What if I replace this magnet with something about copywriting – something that motivates me?”

So I went into my office and typed up a quote from Making the Leap,” printed it out, and stuck it on my fridge. It’s a motivational goldmine, full of success stories of copywriters who’ve made it, and they share proven steps to help you succeed, too.

Here’s the quote I chose:

“First, realize that you can make six figures as a copywriter. That is an attainable goal. But, if you don’t believe it, you will undercharge for your services. Remember, even the most unskilled of laborers can easily earn $30,000 a year. You bring real, valuable skills to the table. They are worth $100,000 a year. Or more.”

So far, this quote has completely changed my outlook on the writer’s life. I was looking at it all wrong. I thought six figures was a lot and therefore unattainable. But as the quote points out, even the most unskilled laborers easily earn $30,000 a year.

I’m finally starting to realize the value we, as copywriters, bring to the businesses we serve, and this has filled me with complete confidence.

And I’ve accomplished more – and received more paying work – in the past couple of weeks than the last few years.

Sometimes all you need to believe success is possible are the right words. And when you find them, make your fridge, walls, office wall, and anything else you can think of tell you every day.

And if you need a good resource of inspirational quotes and motivational success stories, check out Making the Leap or the Wall of Fame today.

Look for quotes that prove your fears are wrong or ones that make you feel like the sky is the limit. If you find a quote that makes you want to start writing immediately – or finally pick up the phone and call a potential client – hang onto it. And feel free to share it with me and your fellow writers by posting a comment below.

  1. Hi Christina! I have been "getting to" your article on my sidebar all week. Thank you for posting it...I'm going to print it out and tape it to my fridge (which doesn't accept magnets!). I just ordered something today...a beach, an umbrella, an Adirondack chair, a pail and shovel and frothy waves in the background. The caption around the edges of this piece reads: "If life is the pursuit of happiness the beach is the destination". THE GOAL IS TO BE A PAID COPYWRITER WRITING FROM A BEACHCHAIR

  3. The quote I have taped to my computer is "Do not ask for success unless you are ready to conquer the behaviors that would sabotage success." Another quote, which is on my printer, is "What is called for is faith. Faith enough to work further, faith enough to invest more, faith enough to risk again."

  4. You know, I have been bombarded with information about making money writing however there are a couple of things that bother me. Where do you start? Do you start with AWAI, PWA or Barefoot Entrepeneur? I am unemployed with a few weeks left and at first I was going to go with the copywriting course but you don't make money write away. Who do I pay to learn a way to make money writing for the least amount preferably really low start-up costs? I know this should be a comment but Help! I'm scared.

  5. To Gypsy: That sounds like a beautiful piece! What deadline have you given yourself for your goal?

To Sean: Love it!! I might steal/borrow that for my facebook :)

To Natalie: GREAT quotes! I might also have to use those on my facebook - if you don't mind...

  6. Hi Tracey,

It's okay to be afraid - I think we all were when we started.

I personally chose to start with the 6 figure course because I needed to learn all the basics. If you can dedicate enough time, you can move through it pretty quickly.

  7. Yikes! Sooner is better; put in the time and the work (yes, I can!) and "allow" myself to go at my pace before I become a not-nice-person-to-be-around. Never was very good at juggling the proverbial career AND a marriage? OK, maybe a case of "arrested development" BUT THIS IS MY TIME FOR ME! Even Grandma Moses was a "late bloomer"!
I am ASTOUNDED by the support members give to other members...thank you, once more!
