How to Succeed Faster by Taking the Day Off

Christina Gillick here for the last time this week. To wrap up, I want us to do something fun together.

Let’s spend a day actually living the writer’s life.

For a long time I lied to myself. I said I didn’t mind working 9-5.

I guess I just didn’t realize what setting my own schedule and making six figures a year would look like.

Now I do. And I want more!

You see, my husband and I both have day jobs. And in our free time (i.e., on evenings and weekends), he’s usually working on remodeling our house while I’m doing client projects. We don’t have a lot of time to just relax.

So I came up with the idea of just taking a day off from work of any kind. We’d just have fun. Then I thought, “Why not spend this day doing what we would do if we were living the writer’s life?”

We picked Friday. (When our freelance business is fully functioning, we’re going to take every Friday off, so really it was perfect.)

We spent the entire day getting pampered (I exchanged some client work for a couple’s massage), going out for meals, shopping, and watching movies.

Ever since then, I’ve had dedication like you would not believe. Taking that day off gave us both an idea of what we’re working so hard for.

On Monday, I talked about thinking positively and imagining how your business will be when you’re a successful copywriter. But if you’re having trouble actually picturing your life like that, or if you can’t really get a grasp on how the writer’s life will benefit you, take a day off to experience it firsthand. If you can’t get away for a whole day, spend an afternoon or an evening doing what you will do when you reach your goals.

You’ll find it’s a lot easier to study, practice, approach clients, overcome fears, and think positively when you know exactly what you’re working for.

Why not take a moment and schedule a day to experience the writer’s life right now? You won’t regret it. And if you have any questions for me, please post a comment below.

  1. Christina - your articles have "rocked" all week. This one in particular. There's great value in "acting-as-if." Thanks for encouraging me to put that into practice via your words. Press on...

  2. Dear Christina, Thank you for your support, your proposal and advise is highly valuable. In fact i am writing copy and concepts since 2 decades for my local clients. I have recently signed up as AWAI member and don't know what to do and how to approach Clients out side my country so that I could write for them! Thanks & Good wishes.

  3. OMG!! And here I've been living the writer's life WITHOUT clients!! Yes, I "find it's a lot easier to study, practice, approach clients, overcome fears, and think positively when you know exactly what you're working for" but THE clients are the hardest ones to find to make the writer's life a viable one.Still working at hunting down the elusive long-term clients.
