Do You Believe You Can Succeed?

I’m Christina Gillick, an AWAI member who recently joined Circle of Success. I’m very excited to take over The Writer’s Life this week.

Let me kick things off by asking you a question …

Do you truly believe you can succeed as a copywriter? Do you know without a doubt the effort you’re putting in now will pay off later?

If you said, “No” or “Maybe” or “I’m not sure,” that’s okay. If you stick with me this week, I’m going to help you increase your confidence so you’ll know that it is possible for you to enjoy the writer’s life. You can create your own destiny, make a lot of money, and enjoy life the way you were meant to.

I know I’m preaching to the choir here. Deep down, you know it’s possible. But I also know how hard it is to stay motivated when you come home from your j-o-b day after day to practice your writing or apply for new projects. I know you feel fear and doubt at times.

I’ve been there. Some days, you feel like the best writer in the world. Then something happens and you feel like a failure (check out Steve Roller’s article “True Confessions of an Unorthodox Copywriter” to see why you’re definitely not).

Some days, you feel like nothing can stop you. Other times, you’re ready to give up.

Just a few short months ago, I thought the writer’s life couldn’t possibly be what everyone said it was. And even if it was that good, I probably wasn’t a good enough writer to make it. I was really giving myself a hard time.

But I’m not one to give up easily. So I sat down and gave myself a pep talk:

”There are a lot of successful copywriters who are making a lot of money right now. When are you going to get serious and make a name for yourself? It’s now or never.”

The thought of not being a successful copywriter was so terrifying I decided right then and there I would be a successful copywriter, no matter what. First, I just had to erase the doubts and convince myself it was possible.

Today, I know that the writer’s life is as amazing as everyone says – probably more so. I know all the effort I’m putting in now will pay off tenfold.

I want that same assurance for you too. I want you to know your hard work will be worth it.

So this week, I’m going to talk about staying motivated, overcoming your fear, and moving toward your goal of living the writer’s life – even on the days you don’t feel like it. And if you have any questions for me, feel free to share them with me by posting a comment below.

Step #1 is to stop your stinkin’ thinkin’ … I stopped mine by accidentally stumbling on a movie on my Netflix Queue. Read my article “How to Think Yourself into Success as a Copywriter,” to find out which movie I’m talking about – and to learn how to think yourself into success as a copywriter.

Then tune in tomorrow because I’m going to give you the second step to believing that success is possible.

  1. I have shelved two novels, an unfinish manuscript on Christianity and an autobiography. I am saving my pennies to purchase Nick Usborne web site and post some meaningful content on the virtues on buying gourmet coffee. I have currently started to work on my autobiography again and my writing just "stinks," I am my worst critic and I cannot help but feel whether I am cut out to be a writer or not, but I sure love to write, it is just that I am not up to par with some excellent writers out there. Sorry for venting; didn't mean to. Anyway, please have good night. Thanks for your attention.

  2. Hi Christina!
Very motivating! I find myself fighting exactly the battle you describe and it´s great to have (re)confirmed that a) we´re not alone and b)we CAN do this! I´ve been following your articles here and on the WWW and I love your stuff! It´s great watching your "star rise"...I can´t wait to find out step #2!

  3. I've made millions of dollars writing movies. But I can't get a job anymore and I'm losing my home. I tried the AWAI program last year but gave up after a couple of weeks. I'm doing any job I can now, just to try to feed my family.

  4. To Carlos: It's true that we are our own worst critics! I'm sure your writing is better than you think it is!

To JanM: Thank you for the compliment! I think half the work of being a writer is keeping your chin up and reminding yourself that it is possible. Once that is done, the rest seems easy :)

To Karnage: I'm sorry to hear about what's happened to you! Is it possible to write movies as a freelancer? I recommend reading about AWAI member, Joshua Boswell. His story is very motivational.
