How to Become a Limitless Copywriter
A couple of months ago, my wife and I were looking for a Friday night movie to see. One review caught my eye, "New York City writer struggling to get started on his book gets dumped by his girlfriend and faces a bleak future … "
Not exactly inspiring material for a freelance writer on the rise.
But then I read the rest of the review, " … discovers a designer drug, NZT 48, that allows him to use 100% of his brain's capacity. It makes him laser-focused and more confident than any man alive."
Now, that's more like it!
We went to see Limitless with Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, and it didn't disappoint.
The premise of the movie is that Cooper's character latches on to this new drug that essentially gives him super-brain powers. He finishes his book in four days, learns piano and new languages almost instantly, and quickly rises to the top of the financial world.
Pretty cool, hey?
But what if there really was a way to be limitless? What if all you had to do was pop a little designer drug and you could tap all the hidden resources and potential of your brain? What if you exuded super-confidence in any social or business situation?
How amazing would it be to crank out a book in three days … learn Mandarin Chinese in four days, then jet off to Hong Kong to close a major business deal you've been working on … deliver a keynote speech to an audience of thousands at a major corporate event (that you whipped up in half an hour that morning) … or simply write A-level copy at twenty times your current speed?
Even at $800 a pop like in the movie, I'd be game.
Well, the "magic little pill" I've been talking about all week is a metaphor for doing the right things.
Getting past the mental blocks that hold us back. Channeling our inner game. Acting as a professional right from the start to get clients and retain them.
It's not quite as glamorous as Bradley Cooper's character. In fact, it's downright boring if you compare the two experiences. (A whole lot safer, though. I won't give away the movie if you haven't seen it yet.)
Let me leave you with this advice:
- Make a mental shift. Refine the areas I discussed in "Winning at the Inner Game of Copywriting".
- Work on improving your skills continuously. Even the pros are constantly learning – it's a never-ending challenge.
- Give yourself time. It doesn't happen overnight for most of us. But everyone I know who's put in the proper time has made it eventually.
I'll keep escaping to the movies on Friday nights occasionally, but my plans are grounded in good old-fashioned hard work, perseverance, and a serious shift in thinking.
