Who Do You Surround Yourself With?
It’s a popular saying in self-help circles.
But it’s extremely true.
That is, you are the sum total of the 5 people you spend the most time with.
The logic here is simple. Want to be rich? Start hanging out with rich people.
Want to lose weight? Start making friends with folks who value their health and fitness.
Want to be a great copywriter? Hang out with other copywriters who are in the field working.
The idea is that by hanging out with these people, some of their beliefs, habits and actions that make them who they are will seep into your life.
So if you’re hanging around with other copywriters who are ALWAYS talking about techniques, insights on getting clients, etc … you’re BOUND to start doing some of that stuff yourself.
And once you do, you’ll be on the fast track to success.
Of course, the same can be said for the opposite scenario.
Hang out with people who don’t have goals, no direction in life, who only live for instant gratification and you’ll soon be heaped in with them.
That’s why, if your goal is to live the writer’s life, you should start making connections with people who are already there …
First, you’ll need to figure out where they hang out.
Online, you can find them over at the AWAI forums if you’re a member of one of their programs. You can also try social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.
Offline, you can try your local Direct Marketing Association (DMA) chapter or at any live events AWAI puts on (like the FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp). Just go up to the people you’d like to meet and let them know who you are … and what you hope to achieve.
Most folks will be delighted to see someone who’s just like them. So if you’re a little shy about mingling, don’t worry about it. Copywriters are usually a receptive, welcoming bunch.
And another great option, of course, is becoming a member of AWAI’s Professional Writers' Alliance (PWA). It’s a great place where you can connect with other like-minded folks who are exactly where YOU want to be. You can learn more about the Professional Writers' Alliance here.
To sum up:
If you want to succeed (in a big way) as a copywriter, start hanging out with other successful copywriters.
