You Don't Need Talent
What I’m about to say may shock you …
At the same time you may find yourself exhaling a breath you didn’t realize you were holding.
Ready?
You don’t need talent to live the writer’s life.
You don’t need talent to be a successful copywriter, a wealthy web writer, or a six-figure grant writer.
You need practice.
Michael Masterson and other great copywriters have been preaching this for years.
And in the last decade of my own marketing career, I’ve witnessed this truth firsthand …
Hundreds of AWAI members, who have come to us with little to no experience, choose a path, commit to learning and putting in the time, become successful, and achieve their dreams of living the writer’s life.
It’s the reason I fly out of bed every morning excited to start my day. And the reason I believe in AWAI, its programs, and its promises.
One of those success stories, Ed Gandia, recently wrote an article on the topic titled Talent Is Overrated. I highly recommend you check it out.
If you’re not familiar with Ed Gandia, he’s a successful B2B copywriter who had to replace a six-figure income before making the leap to full-time freelancer. He spent 27 months learning his craft and preparing for the “big leap,” and made over $127K in his first year as a freelance B2B copywriter.
Since then he’s helped dozens of AWAI members follow in his footsteps, and most recently published the already popular program, Writing Case Studies: How to Make a Great Living by Helping Clients Tell Their Stories, where he shows writers how to make $1,250 – $2,000, for a project that typically takes 5 to 7 hours to write.
Ed didn’t have any special writing talent when he started. He just knew he wanted to be home with his family – that was his version of the writer’s life.
So he chose B2B copywriting as his path, committed to learning and putting in the time, became successful, and is now living the life he always wanted.
You can do it too …
The first step is choosing your path. If you haven’t done that yet, get on with it!
And then commit to learning.
You don’t need any special talents. You just need the desire to succeed and the commitment to doing what it takes.
Side note: Something that will help you with the learning process is to get knowledgeable feedback on your writing.
As Copy Coach Will Newman says, “You can write all the time. But if you don’t get feedback, it’s like bowling blindfolded. You’ll never know if it’s effective or not.”
A group like the Professional Writers' Alliance (PWA) that is committed to giving you feedback will help you see problems you might not otherwise have seen because you’re “too close” to the copy.
In addition, a good peer group like PWA will also support you in your pursuit of writing success … they’ll help you through times of self-doubt or frustration.
Rather than going it alone, check out PWA for yourself.
Just remember, the Charter Membership deal ends tomorrow. So check it out today!
