Two Hot (and Sexy) Markets for Web Writers
You’re going to be surprised when I tell you about these two hot markets for web writers. That’s because both are on the business-to-business (B2B) side of the fence … a place too many writers mistakenly think of as the land of the dull and boring.
As I’ve pointed out in many of my articles, writing for businesses that sell products and services to other businesses can be fun, exciting, and even a little sexy.
The two fast-growing markets I’m about to introduce you to prove it.
Both are experiencing double-digit growth right now.
Both are experiencing a shortage of good web writers. (That means the work is easier to get.)
Both represent projects that often pay very well. ($100 per hour and up.)
And both are, at least to some degree, glamorous. (More on that in a moment.)
Let’s take a look at each of these markets in more detail …
Online Video
There’s no doubt about it. Online video is the next big thing in B2B.
According to a report from eMarketer.com, business-to-business companies will spend 53.3% more this year producing online videos to promote their products and services.
Overall spending on this medium is expected to grow to $4.6 billion by 2012, more than seven times the amount spent last year!
What do all those numbers mean?
They mean you’re going to be a very busy and well-paid writer if you know how to:
- Write for the Web
- Write for a business (rather than consumer) audience, and
- Write an online video script.
Now, if you’re thinking that online videos produced by B2B companies are technical or boring, take a look at the “Thank the Engineer” series from Texas Instruments.
These videos are fun and upbeat, and are completely free of technical jargon. In fact, most writers who are trained in web and B2B writing could easily script videos like these. (And, have a heck of a lot of fun doing so.)
I predict that, within the next year, there will be a handful of web writers who will have become known as the “online video scriptwriting” gurus.
Start now and you could be one of them!
And glamour? Well, imagine pointing out to your friends an online video you wrote that’s all over the Internet!
Social Media
The second hot and sexy market for web writers is probably no surprise to you: social media. What may be a surprise, however, is the extent in which social media is booming amongst business-to-business companies.
According to a survey by eMarketer.com, 66% of B2B companies will spend more of their marketing budgets on social media initiatives this year. They’ll be communicating with their prospects and customers on blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, you name it, more than ever before.
What’s the number one ingredient to successful social media marketing? Good writing!
And, for many B2B companies, that’s not always easy to find.
I was speaking with a potential client last week who told me, “We would double our social media activities tomorrow, if only we could find someone to write all the posts and ‘Tweets’ we need.”
That says a lot about the demand.
And, like online video, writing for social media has a high glamour factor. Hey, who wouldn’t want to tell their friends that they ‘Tweet’ for IBM!
So, there you have it. B2B online video and B2B social media — two of the fastest growing markets for web writers today. The demand is high and the money is great. But, there’s something else about these two markets that I really like: the work is a lot of fun, too!
