It's Already Time to Revise Your New Year's Goals

Last issue, I shared the case against New Year's resolutions, and what type of goal-setting works instead. I hope you've already come up with your goals for 2010 and broken them down into actionable steps.

Now, I'm going to make you rewrite your goals. Or, at least round them out.

Let's start with a story from Nathan Kievman of LinkedStrategies:

Why this means revising your New Year's goals

Well, this is my first year that I'm creating New Year's goals as a father. And, it's really driven home that my workaholic tendencies need to be kept in check. Because the health and happiness of my family comes before any accomplishments in my work life and career.

So, this year, I'm finally looking at all the areas of my life I should have been paying attention to from the beginning.

Don't get me wrong though. My biz-related goals are just as big as ever.

Yet, this year, I'm creating additional, more important goals. For a healthy marriage. A healthy family. Physical health. Spiritual peace and wellbeing.

All of that is scheduled and prioritized on top of my business and money goals. So, even though I'll be spending a lot of time this year growing my primary business as a copywriter, plus managing at least a couple new spare-time biz projects, I'll also have set aside plenty of time and energy for the other things that make me happy and healthy.

There's bigger benefits to this, too

As a psychology major in college, my primary interest was in a small field of psychology called Integral Psychology. The focus was a balanced life and lifestyle leading to better overall health.

What research in this area has found is the more you focus on a single thing (like business) to the exclusion of all others, the less successful you are in that single area. Yet, when you take a balanced approach — focusing on health, wealth, wisdom, spirituality, and all the other areas where we can grow and create happiness for ourselves as human beings — you become more and more successful in each area.

I don't think it's a coincidence as you get to know more and more people who are successful in business, many have spent a lot of time learning and practicing either contemplative prayer or meditation. Many of them have also worked hard to keep a healthy family life. And, regularly workout and exercise, plus take supplements and stay on top of the latest medical knowledge to maintain maximum health.

Because when you work to grow and expand in all areas, you can be more successful in each.

My challenge to you

So, I challenge you. If your goals for this year don't include health, wisdom, social, and spiritual goals, then you should add these.

It can be as simple as setting a goal and laying out a plan to take your partner on a date each week, or twice a month. To give each of your children at least one afternoon or evening a month where you spend focused one-on-one time where it's just you and them. To meditate for 15 minutes every morning. To take a walk every day before grabbing lunch.

Because as you do each of these things … seemingly unrelated to your spare-time biz … you're unwittingly growing your ability to be more successful in your biz, too.

That's when things will really take off.
