Job Opportunities …
Health Writers: Freelance Editorial Opportunity
Helen Buttery, Marketing Director for Al Sears, MD, is looking to add to her freelance editorial team with writers who understand how to write persuasively.
From Helen: Please go to our website at www.alsearsmd.com. Look at past articles.
Pick one topic to write on – make sure the article focuses on one big idea.
Length: 600-800 words
If selected, the payment for the article is $125.00
At the top of the submission, please include the following:
Name:
Big Idea:
Flesch-Kincaid Score: (should be under 8.0)
2 Subject line suggestions.
The article should have:
- A contrarian stance
- Conversational tone in Dr. Sears’ voice
- A benefit to the reader right up front
- Simple advice that the reader can put to use right away
- A narrow focus – don’t get sidetracked – cover one aspect
Our editorial is divided into three parts:
Lead: promise and benefit, unique contrarian view
Body: proof, credibility and evidence
Advice: easy to follow steps the reader can take right away
Don’t make your editorial journalistic or informational. Make the writing more personal. It should have opinion and emotion. A warm intimate connection between doctor and reader.
All evidence should be related in a way that is reader friendly, not scientific, boring or academic.

I'm writing to Dr. Sears to express my interest in writing for them. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Incidentally, what is a contrarian stance? And a Flesch-Kincaid score?
Do you have anything on hand that tells me how to write a letter using Word? I don't know where the page ends, nor how to indent, nor how to manipulate the page.
I use Word now, but my writing is not nice and proper, the way I want it to be.

When they asked for a contrarian stance, they want the focus of the piece to be "contrary" or not popular opinion. Don't follow the crowd.
The Flesh-Kincaid (FK)score is the readability score. They have asked for an 8.0 score; this means that you needd to use language that can easily be read by an eighth grader or someone with an eighth grade education.
To determine the FK score in your article you need to set the GRAMMAR and SPELLING function to determine the score. Usually this is through the TOOLS menue and/or Options under Spelling and Grammar tools. Check the "Show readability statistics" box. When you finish spell checking your document, you will get a box that has the FK score shown.
The best way to learn Microsoft Word is to pick up the book Microsoft Office Word Step by Step in the year of your program. It will show you a great deal about the program.
I hope this helps and had not confused you more.

I recommend a free program called XMailWrite from XSitePro. Although formatted for email/autoresponder, it does give you, at a glance, your Readability and Flesh-Kincaid score, Word count and statistics, and a Spam filter with suggestions for improving your writing.
