Freelancers Stand to Benefit as B2B Companies Spend More on Marketing in 2010
Facing an uncertain economy, tougher regulations and potentially higher healthcare costs, B2B companies are hiring freelancers at a very healthy pace. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a whopping 31 percent of the U.S. labor force is currently made up of either freelancers, independent contractors, self-employed or temporary workers. Among the freelancers in high demand right now are B2B copywriters, many of who are busier than they’ve ever as the clients they work with have cut their marketing staff to the bone.
“B2B companies just don’t want to take on the overhead and risk of hiring full-time employees right now,” said Ed Gandia, a successful B2B copywriter and a presenter at AWAI's upcoming B2B Virtual Workshop. “I’m seeing many B2B companies scrambling to source talent for critical marketing projects,” he added. “Rather than reverting to the typical hire-and-fire cycle, many of these businesses are turning to freelance professionals to fill in the gaps.”
For new and aspiring B2B copywriters, the trend looks very favorable. A recent survey conducted by Elance showed that nearly a third of businesses surveyed plan on hiring more freelancers and less full-time employees in the near future.
Additionally, 53 percent of B2B companies surveyed by B2B magazine expect to increase their marketing budget in 2010. Only 10 percent believe their marketing budgets will be cut, a clear indication that most companies see the value of a concerted marketing effort, even in tough times.
And some high-profile business leaders even predict that the growth of the freelancer sector is a key component of economic recovery and growth. “The unique package of skills and flexibility that contractors and freelancers can offer can result in the productivity gains required to make Europe a global competitor,” says Michael van Swaaij, the chairman of Skype. “Plus, individuals are now demanding the work-life balance that the freelance lifestyle can support.” [Source]
No question, the future looks bright for freelancers, and the spending by B2B companies on marketing initiatives foretell a rosy future for B2B copywriters.
