Don't Get Caught In This Sales Letter “Trap”
I know what you're thinking …
You're thinking: "Okay, so I'm an official copywriter. Now where are all the clients?"
Well, that's very normal. Because one of the biggest challenges in our craft is finding – and keeping – good clients.
However, there may be a few of you out there who are looking in all the wrong places.
Let me explain …
Usually, when a new copywriter hits the online world, they focus on the "big" thing – sales letters.
And there's nothing wrong with that. Heaven knows there's a tremendous need for good sales letters out there.
But if this is your main focus, you may be missing out on a HUGE opportunity that's sitting right in front of your eyes.
It's true – there's a hidden marketplace out there that few copywriters are taking advantage of.
This virtual treasure trove involves a specific type of copywriting that's quick, easy, fun, and best of all EXTREMELY lucrative – if you A) know how to write it and B) know how to market yourself effectively in this area.
Yep, I'm talking about the cash-flush world of email and autoresponder writing. Consider these statistics from a recent study by Forrester Research s(courtesy of WebProNews.com) …
- New research suggests that email marketing in the US will reach $2 billion by 2014.
- Retention email, or email that recipients have blessed with their permission, will continue to replace paper communications and will make up the largest share of marketing messages. Retention emails will account for more than a one-third of all marketing messages in consumers’ inboxes by 2014, representing increased competition for marketers.
- Spending on opt-in, ad-sponsored, or ad-supported newsletters will double over the next five years as traditional print publishers face falling circulation and ad revenue.
Startling numbers, aren't they? And the amazing thing is, only a handful of copywriters specialize in catering to this mega-sector.
It's true. Just a small group of copywriters have been tapping into this massive fortune. And guess what? They're keeping their traps shut about it so no one else will horn in on this primo gig.
Wouldn't you?
So what's so great about email and autoresponder copywriting? First of all, it's a lot easier (and faster) to write a few short emails than it is to agonize for days over a 10-page sales letter.
Secondly, you have much more variety, utilizing many different storylines and approaches instead of getting bogged down in one grueling subject for weeks at a time.
Finally, it can be very lucrative for those who know how to write this type of copy. It's not unheard of for email and autoresponder copywriters to receive $100 … $200 … even $300 or more per message. Write a couple of emails an hour, for only a few hours a day, and you can see how the numbers can add up quickly.
But before you dive into this incredibly underserviced marketplace, here are a few tips to get you started the right way.
- Target a niche that you're familiar with or passionate about. Your email messages will shine brighter and have more punching power if you love the subject matter.
- Get some samples together. Find a Clickbank product on a subject that you're familiar with and sign up to be an affiliate. Then set up a landing page and write a series of follow-up emails for it. This is a great way to show off your talents, because you'll have quantifiable numbers to back it up.
- Market yourself to those who need your services most. Do an online search for information products in a niche you're interested in and contact the marketer about putting together a follow-up email series. Make sure your email inquiry highlights your copywriting talents. You'll be surprised at how many jump at the chance.
As you can see, the email and autoresponder market is truly an untapped source for copywriters, and a virtual gold mine for those who take advantage of it.
