Here’s how it happened in Warwick’s own words:
“I made contact with a guy who has an Internet marketing site, mainly because I liked some of his posts. I didn’t approach him looking for work, but did mention that I’m a copywriter.
“He asked me if I’d be interested in rewriting some of the sales letters for his products. He sells e-books on a variety of subjects, from karate, judo, boxing etc. (Note: I have little experience with martial arts, but I’m curious and can get interested in just about anything.)
“The major hurdle initially was about whether I had experience, and did I have some samples. Fortunately, I had put up an affiliate marketing site myself, so I could show him that page, and had written some e-zine articles, which were showing good traffic stats, so I could quote those. I also used Steve Slaunwhite’s ETO (Easy Try Offer) and said I would rewrite the first sales page on my time – if he liked it he would then pay, and send future work. If he didn’t like it, we could go our separate ways and no harm done.
“We settled on a rate per sales letter, which means I am effectively writing for an hourly rate about 15% higher than the hourly rate of my ‘day job’ as an engineer. So far, I have completed 10 sales letters and have been paid! The client says they are ‘perfect,’ but I will be interested in sales conversions. The main bonus for me is that now I have an actual paying client, and a number of ‘real’ samples that I can use in future marketing efforts.”
