Return to Sender, Email Address Unknown
Almost four years ago, I switched to a web-based email provider.
It was just after I moved. My Internet Service Provider (ISP) didn't provide service at my new location. It was the second time in three years I had to change my email address.
Changing email addresses is always a bit of inconvenience. First off, you have to let all your contacts know about the change. Then you have to update your email address with memberships sites and ezines/e-letters you subscribe to.
So I decided to move away from ISP-reliant email and signed up for a Gmail account. Now, as long as Google is still in business, I'll never again have to change my email address.
Here are a few other advantages of web-based email:
- Because your email doesn't reside on your hard drive, if you change computers you'll never have to worry about having to transfer your email to your new computer (like you would if you use an ISP-based email and Microsoft Outlook).
- If your computer crashes, you don't have to worry about losing your archived emails because they're safely stored on the Internet. (Note: If you'd like to format your Gmail account in Microsoft Outlook, you can still do that. All your messages on Gmail will still be stored and accessible online).
- Web-based email services don't take a bite out of your hard drive space. Not a big concern with the size of hard drives available today, but if your computer is a bit older and has say, an 80 GB hard drive, every bit of space you can free up helps.
- You can send and receive emails from multiple email addresses using your Gmail account. This means that if you have a non-Gmail email address you use for work; you can manage it from your Gmail inbox. This saves you time and allows you to store all your important emails in one place.
The three main providers of web-based email are Google (Gmail), Yahoo ("Yahoo Mail" & "Yahoo Mail Plus") and Microsoft (Windows Live Mail).
If you're looking to have an email that you'll most likely have for the rest of your life, no matter where you move or what ISP you use, you may want to consider signing up for a web-based email address.

John, Do you use the web based address just for business or home use as well. I might consider just using that for copy work.
Then my family and friends could still find me.

Hi 58peudster. I have an AWAI email address that I do use for business. For everything else I use my Gmail address. As I mentioned in the article, you can send from multiple email addresses from your Gmail inbox. So it's very convenient.
