Copywriting Success:
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
“Oh, you hate your job? Why didn’t you say so?
There’s a support group for that.
It’s called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.”
– Drew Carey
July of 2006 was a terrifying month for Wall of Famer and web content writer Pam Foster.
She was frustrated with her job … she’d gone as far as she could go with her company, had no promotion in sight, and wasn’t using her talents to their full potential.
Sure, the benefits were great … a steady, reliable income … 401(k) plan … and health insurance. So good, the thought of leaving it all was scary.
But with faith on her side, Pam quit her job as a corporate cubicle-dweller and started her freelance career. Turns out her bold move paid off. Now she’s earning six figures every year as a web copywriter.
And even more important than that, she has a career that she loves, that requires all of her talents, and she no longer has to answer to bosses, punch a time clock, or get permission to take time off to see friends and family.
Perhaps you might be where Pam was just a few short years ago. And the only thing stopping you is the fear of losing that safety net – the steady income your job provides and all the benefits that come with it. Or maybe it’s the fear that you’ll fail to make it as a freelance copywriter.
Regardless, you can use the same tool Pam used, and that she still uses today. It’s played a huge part in her success.
It’s having a support group. But not just any support group. You’ve got to surround yourself with people like you … people who understand what you’re trying to do.
Not only will your support group give you encouragement and the confidence to take action, but they’ll also hold you accountable. Plus, it can be a great sounding board for ideas, critiques of your work, and a great place to share and celebrate your successes!
Having a group of like-minded people you can turn to is hands-down the best way to transition from employee to freelance copywriter, and from freelance copywriter to six-figure copywriter and beyond.
Here’s a few ways you can form your own support group:
- Go to the AWAI forum and get to know people there. Write a post introducing yourself. Offer help to others. Ask questions. Eventually, you’ll make a few friends, and you can email or call each other to exchange ideas, talk about your goals, etc.
- Attend networking events in your hometown. Look for people who are open-minded and understand what it is you’re trying to do. One good place to do this is at your local Direct Marketing Association (DMA) chapter. You could also join your local Chamber of Commerce. They regularly have networking events you can attend.
- Go to copywriting or marketing seminars, where you’ll find dozens of people who’ll be happy to be a part of a tightly knit group of copywriters who support each other. AWAI’s Bootcamp, Writer’s Retreat, or Web Copywriting Intensive are great jumping points for this. In fact, Pam met one of her support groups – the Delray Motivators – at the first Bootcamp she attended. Since then, she has formed other support groups at Bootcamp, and these relationships have been instrumental in helping Pam achieve the success she enjoys today.
- Join Circle of Success when enrollment opens up again. Once you join, you’ll automatically be in a success group of 25 copywriters … all who will be rooting for your success and there for you when you need them most. (Even though Pam has formed a couple of support groups on her own, she’s also a Circle of Success member.)
You can become successful on your own. But why make it so hard on yourself? Add this one tool to your growing success toolkit. Start building your support group today!
