Spin Your Web Copy Dreams Into Gold …
in Only Six Steps
In August, AWAI held its first-ever Web Copywriting Intensive, where 50 determined copywriters gathered to learn everything they needed to know to claim the title “Web Copy Specialist” just three days later. And, over the past month, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with each of the attendees one-on-one.
With each conversation, I found a single consistent theme: the intense desire to write effective web copy, partnered with a clear idea of how much money they want to make and when they want to make it.
So we created a plan of action for achieving their short-term financial goals for the rest of the year. Remember, these members have the desire and drive to become successful now. They aren’t interested in waiting until the first of next year to get started!
So now it’s your turn. How much do you want to make?
One of my favorite books is written by Napoleon Hill. It’s the famous Think and Grow Rich, detailing a money-making secret which has made fortunes for hundreds of exceedingly wealthy men, including Henry Ford, Charles M. Schwab, Theodore Roosevelt, John D. Rockefeller, and Thomas Edison – just to name a few.
In it, Hill details a six-step process for turning your desire for riches into its financial equivalent. To illustrate, I’ll walk you through the process, using an example from one of the Web Intensive attendees and his goal for the remainder of the year.
Step 1: Define how much money you want to make from your web copy.
Whether you’re looking to write web copy for clients, or make money with your own website, take a minute right now and decide on the exact amount of money you desire. Then fix that number in your mind. I’m talking about an actual number here … not simply “six figures” or “a lot of money.”
Example: “I want to make $40,000 from my web copywriting.”
Step 2: Decide what you intend to give in return for the money you desire.
Remember, in life there is no such thing as “something for nothing.” (Except for maybe this e-letter!) What are you willing to give up in order to reach your goal?
Example: “I will invest the $495 in ‘Copywriting 2.0: Your Complete Guide to Writing Web Copy that Converts’ program and the $495 in Heather Lloyd-Martin’s ‘SEO Copywriting Success.’ I will give up one entire weekend to get through both of them. And I will dedicate five hours a day after that to building my web copy business.”
Step 3: Establish the exact date that you intend to possess the money you desire.
Again, the key here is to be specific. “Next year” is not going to cut it.
Example: “I will have earned that much from my clients by December 15, 2008.”
Step 4: Create a plan.
In order to achieve your goal, you’ll need a plan of action. Take the time to create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you’re ready or not.
Example:
Today: Order the two programs that will teach me the skills I still need to learn.
Next weekend: Lock myself in the house and stay focused on the intense training that I have planned for myself. Ask family and friends to pretend I’m away on vacation and not to disturb me. Turn off my phone, disconnect my computer from the Internet, and get through both programs.
Monday: Launch my web copywriting business. Choose a domain name and plan the website pages needed. Start writing the pages.
Tuesday: Spend two hours researching 10 potential new clients. Spend the rest of the day writing a self-promotional email selling my web copy services.
Wednesday: Read AWAI’s ‘Writing for the Web’ e-letter. Contact the 10 potential new clients and spend the rest of the day finishing my website.
Thursday: Research 10 more potential new clients. Upload and finalize my website. Follow up with any potential clients who have responded.
Friday: Contact the next 10 prospects. Select my top two ‘dream clients’ from the 20 I contacted this week. Spend the rest of the day re-writing a page from each of their websites.
Step 5: Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
Example: “I want to make $40,000 from writing web copy by December 15th. I’m going to invest in the training I need and dedicate five hours of every day to perfecting my craft and building my business. Each week I will research and contact 20 potential new clients, follow up with those already contacted, and write web copy for my current clients, my dream clients, and my own website.”
Step 6: Read your written statement aloud, twice daily (once just before going to bed, and once after waking in the morning). As you read – see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money.
Hill goes on to say that you must observe and follow this last step carefully. Even if you have trouble “seeing yourself in possession of money” before you actually have it, keep working at it until you do. You have to truly desire the money and become so determined that you convince yourself you’ll have it.
I can tell you from personal experience it may not be easy to see it right away. But if you keep trying, you’ll eventually get there.
So now you have set your goal for the remainder of the year, and you have your plan. Go ahead and get started, and each week I’ll give you more tools, tips, and techniques to write effective web copy, identify new revenue streams for your business, find and work with new clients, and make money online.
“Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.” – Napoleon Hill
