Quick Tip:
Grammar Made Fun
You don’t have to be a grammar expert to write strong DM copy. However, it’s important to know enough of the basics to make your copy read well. Badly constructed writing with a lot of errors draws attention to itself, taking the prospect’s attention away from what you’re trying to sell.
So today, I’m going to tell you about a source of good grammar tips that’s downright enjoyable.
It’s the Grammar Girl podcast. (If you don’t know about podcasts, hang in there. I’ll explain them in a moment.)
Grammar Girl picks a single grammar or writing topic for her weekly podcast and discusses it for between 2 and 4 minutes. Short. Sweet. Fun. And very informative.
Most of what she has to say relates directly to writing good DM copy – like eliminating unnecessary words or not leading with a definition (a REAL pet peeve of mine).
Now, about podcasts: These are audio files (usually MP3 format) that you play on your computer, iPod, or MP3 player.
The easiest way to get and play them is by using iTunes software. iTunes is FREE from Apple Computer (www.apple.com/itunes/overview) and is available for both Macintosh and Windows.
After you download and install iTunes, you’re ready to receive podcasts. Simply click once on the iTunes Store icon in the left pane. Once you’re in the store, put “Grammar Girl” (no quotes) into the little search window in the upper right, and hit enter. A list of episodes pops up in the main window.
You can download a single episode or subscribe to the series (my recommendation). It’s free – and every time there’s a new episode, iTunes will download it for you after you start the software.
It’s worth your time to visit the Grammar Girl website (qdnow.com) to see everything she has to offer.
