From The Golden Thread Mailbag …
Public Speaking
Hey Pat,
I’ve been learning more about getting clients lately, and AWAI recommends a number of different methods. I’d like to make a suggestion. You should recommend Toastmasters International to your members who are considering following your advice to seek clients through public speaking.
Since we never get a second chance to make a good first impression, anyone planning to market their services through public speaking should seek training and coaching to help them be at their best. Toastmasters is the world’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to helping people improve their speaking and leadership skills. There are clubs in almost every community – and it is fun, effective, and affordable. Check it out via www.toastmasters.org.

Hello Juanita,
Public speaking is a very good way to make yourself known to potential clients. Yet many freelancers don’t even try, because they’re uncomfortable with the idea of standing up in front of a crowd. (Public speaking is a very common fear.)
Thanks for the suggestion, Juanita. Other members will appreciate the tip.
Hey Pat,
I’m fairly new to the copywriting program. (I’m just getting ready to start my vitamin letter.) However, I’ve got a question that’s been bothering me. How do you keep someone, another copywriter, from plagiarizing your work?
Sharon N.
Hello Sharon,
This really isn’t something you have to worry about. When a copywriter delivers copy to a client, it’s with the understanding that it’s original material. In fact, most clients will have you sign a contract to that effect. If a copywriter chooses to violate that basic trust, he might get away with it once, but he certainly won’t have any kind of career in this industry.
If you were to see some of your copy used inappropriately, you would notify the client with your proof. He would then pursue the offending writer.
But, don’t let worries like this distract you from your main focus right now – becoming the best writer you can be.
That’s it for this week. Thanks to one and all – and keep those emails coming!
