Quick Tip: Bring Nature Into Your Office for Greater Productivity

We are biological creatures. As such, spending a lot of time in unnatural environments – like your home office – can be hazardous to your physical and psychological well-being.

The best way to counter these effects is to spend some time in natural settings. The park and the beach, for example, are great places for brainstorming ideas, reading work-related books and articles (taking notes, of course), and editing/rewriting copy.

If you’re not able to work outdoors, a subtle but effective way to reduce the health hazards – and increase your productivity – is to bring Nature indoors.

  • If possible, locate your desk near a window.
  • Have real plants in your home office to provide a constant supply of fresh oxygen.
  • Hang photos of the outdoors on your office walls.
  • Play recordings of natural sounds while you work – for example, the “Environments” CDs (available from Amazon.com).
