Quick Tip:
Is Noise Destroying Your Productivity?

Some amount of stress – such as having a deadline looming – can boost productivity. But over an extended period of time, stress makes it harder to accomplish what you need to do. Prolonged stress is a productivity killer.

One area of stress you might not think about is noise. Noise in your office environment can have a greater impact on productivity than you may think.

Take a few minutes today to listen carefully in your office area for persistent (and often almost unnoticeable) sources of noise. If possible, reduce its impact by closing doors, hanging curtains, or putting carpeting beneath the source.

If there is nothing you can do to eliminate or lessen serious noise (from a nearby freeway, for example), consider listening to music through headphones to cancel its effect.
