Quick Tip: 4 Pointers for Writing Email Subject Lines

Most communication with clients nowadays is through email, so you want to make sure that yours look professional. You also want to make sure that your subject lines make it easy for your client to go back and find your emails among hundreds of others. Here are four pointers to accomplish that:

  1. Avoid meaningless subject lines like "Hi." This tells your client nothing about the subject of the email.
  2. Include your last name. This is especially important if your email address is something like tncopies@wigwam.com.
  3. Include a brief indication of why you’re writing (e.g., "Vitamin E Promo").
  4. Include the date (even though the date is in the body of the email).

So, a good subject line might look like this: Smith, Vitamin E Promo (11/1/05).
