Quick Tip: Using Quotations to Sell Your Ideas

Some very successful direct-mail packages have used quotations from famous people or sources to help push their sales.

This works well if you pay close attention to the appropriateness of the quote to the product and its benefits. For instance, if you’re selling a physical exercise system, you could quote Thomas Jefferson: "A strong body makes the mind strong."

The Bible (or other religious texts) can be an excellent source of quotes. But be careful. If you’re quoting from a religious text, do NOT use anything that refers to specific religious beliefs (unless, of course, you’re selling to that market).

Regardless of how much you might embrace a particular belief yourself, you cannot assume your prospect does. Using a belief-specific quote can alienate a substantial portion of your prospects. And doing that can easily lose your sale.
