Quick Tip: 5 Pointers for Choosing the Name for Your Website

One of the first decisions you’ll make when setting up your website is what domain name to use when registering it. Take your time in making this important decision. You want a name that helps prospective clients choose you for their next job.

Here are 5 tips for choosing the best name possible:

  1. Pick a domain name that describes what you do – "TopCopy.com," for example. You want your prospects to know what you do when they see your URL (website address) on business cards, at the end of articles, and when they land on your site.
  2. Avoid using just your name … when you’re starting out, that is. Bob Bly can do it with www.Bly.com, because he’s a well-known copywriter (and was long before the Internet became the tool it is today). But until you achieve his fame, stick with a descriptive name.
  3. Avoid words like "the" in your domain name (like "TheTopCopy.com"). If your prospect is working from memory, it’s guaranteed he’ll forget that word and land on the wrong site … or nowhere.
  4. Keep the spelling simple and obvious.
  5. Though there are other website extensions that you could use (like ".biz"), stick with ".com" – even if your top choices for a domain name with the .com extension are already taken. Most potential clients will automatically assume yours is ".com."
