Brian Tracy’s 6 Success Secrets From Bootcamp
Brian Tracy is the number one success coach in this country. He was also the keynote speaker on the opening day of this year’s FastTrack to Success Bootcamp.
As you might imagine, his topic was success … and how to achieve it. It’s impossible to give you all the valuable success secrets he gave us, but here are 6 key strategies to get you started:
SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE TAKE ACTION.
Successful people don’t necessarily work harder than other people. The difference is where and how they apply their efforts.
Brian put it this way: "Successful people take action. Unsuccessful people take vacations … on ‘Someday Isle.’ Someday, I’ll start on my goal to earn $200,000. But first I have to …" (You fill in the blank.)
What he means, plain and simple, is that if you want to be a successful copywriter, you must start doing something about it NOW.
UNDERSTAND THE LAW OF CAUSE AND EFFECT.
The effect you’re looking for is success. And, according to Brian, the most important cause of that success is your thoughts.
"Thoughts are creative," he told the nearly 300 people in the Seacrest Ballroom. "You become what you think about most of the time. What do successful people – the top 10% in any field – think about? They think about what they want and how to get it. Almost all the time."
SEPARATE EVERYTHING INTO FACTS AND PROBLEMS.
Facts are the things you can’t change … including all the mistakes you’ve made and all the offenses or mistreatment you’ve had to endure.
Since you cannot change these facts, don’t waste time on them. Don’t let them become excuses for why things aren’t going the way you want. Instead, concentrate on the problems and challenges that have solutions that will carry you to the success you seek.
THINK IN TERMS OF YOUR HOURLY RATE.
Of course, you can’t measure success solely in terms of how much money you make. But that figure is an important indicator that you’re getting where you want to be.
Most people (90%) think in terms of what they want to earn in a year. The top people think, instead, in terms of what they should be earning every hour.
Here’s how to take this success-oriented approach: Calculate your hourly rate based on how much you want to earn … and concentrate your efforts on the things in your career that will earn you that hourly rate.
You work approximately 2,000 hours a year (40 hours/week x 50 weeks/year). If you want to earn $50,000 a year, divide $50,000 by 2,000. That equals $25/hour. On the other hand, if you want to earn $200,000 a year, everything you do during your work time should be earning you $100/hour.
This not only means that’s what you need to charge for your work, it means you should only be doing work that earns you that rate. In other words, no surfing the Web, playing computer games, or answering unproductive phone calls.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF "THE RULE OF THREE."
According to The Rule of Three, three of the things that you do during the course of your work will earn you 90% of your income. To maximize your chances for success, identify what those three things are … and concentrate your efforts on those critical activities.
APPLY "THE SLOWEST KID RULE" TO YOUR WORK.
If a bunch of kids go on a hike, which one determines the speed of the entire group? The slowest one, of course.
When you apply "The Slowest Kid Rule" to your work, that means your weakest skill will determine how successful you can be. Figure out which skill is your weakest … and work on it until you’ve mastered it. Then work on your next-weakest skill, and so on.
Following Brian’s counsel takes self-discipline. But if you do, these 6 success strategies will quickly become habits, and – as he stressed in his talk – "success is determined by your habits."
