From The Golden Thread Mailbag …
When to Set-Up a Website
Two "quickies" in the Mailbag this week. First, a question from Susan H.…
"I started the copywriting program at the beginning of this year, and I’m still working on it. However, I’m anxious to start landing clients now. On the other hand, I feel like it may be too soon to advertise too heavily. I don’t want to bury myself with projects I’m not ready to handle. Am I better off waiting with website set-up until I finish or at least come close to finishing the program?"
I’m glad you asked this question, Susan. There is an important distinction between being ready and waiting too long. For instance, you don’t want to take a paying assignment if you cannot provide the client with good copy. But waiting too long makes it harder for you to get started.
You’ve been in the program for a while. Waiting much longer would probably be a detriment to you. You should start marketing yourself in some capacity right away. If you have any previous copywriting experience, especially if you have samples of your work, you can set up your website now as well. If not, wait until you have gone through the copywriting program to start your website.
And now, a great endorsement for DirectResponseJobs.com from John K.…
"Hello, AWAI Team! I’ve just landed a copywriting contract through www.directresponsejobs.com to write a direct-mail promotion for a client – and his product is "right up my alley" of expertise. I was able to completely put to rest all of his doubts and concerns, without "giving away the store." My situation reminds me of the story about Gene Schwartz taking Martin Edelstein from a small to a large publishing firm … The Bottom Line!
Following up on those leads from DirectResponse.com sure pays off."
Thanks to one and all. Keep those emails coming!
