From The Golden Thread Mailbag …
Launching a Freelance Business
I’ve got two especially good letters for you in the Mailbag this week. This first one – from Rebekah B. – asks some questions about legal issues that concern many new copywriters …
"Since I’ll technically be a small business owner when I start my own copywriting service, I have a few questions about legalities. Will I need a vendor’s license? Will I need to contact a lawyer? Will I need to contact an accountant?"
I like your question, Rebekah, because it draws attention to one of the main benefits of being a copywriter.
New copywriters are usually attracted to the profession because you get to live and work where you want. You are your own boss. But there’s another big reason: It’s a relatively easy business to start.
By that, I mean that there isn’t much overhead involved. You need a computer, Internet access, and maybe a separate phone line. That’s it. There’s no license to get or professional organization to belong to. You can land paying assignments based solely on how well you write copy.
That said, there is still lots to learn about starting any new business. For instance, there are local and state laws that impose restrictions on small or home-based business. And, of course, they vary from place to place. But you can get complete information about them (as well as the other issues that face the uninitiated) in AWAI’s "Freelance Writing Success in a Box.” In it, we’ve compiled everything you need to know to start, run, and market your new freelance writing business. Good luck, Rebekah!
And speaking of launching a new freelance copywriting business, Bill B. is well on his way …
"Hi, Scott. I recently handed in my Live Assignment from the accelerated program. I’m really excited because I’ve already hooked up with a local graphic arts person to work with, so I’m able to present total packages to potential customers. So far, we’ve landed two projects, and I’ve got to get back with another person this week from another referral. I’m encouraged, because I haven’t even officially launched my business yet!”
That’s great, Bill! Keep us posted on your future successes.
Thanks to one and all. Keep those emails coming!
Scott
