From The Golden Thread Mailbag …
Freelance Copy Assignments
It’s only been a few months since we introduced the AWAI Founder’s Circle, and members are already making the most of it. When we rolled out the first monthly spec assignments, James T. answered the call. He wrote a headline and lead for Agora’s Taipan Group – and heard back from them in less than a week. They want him to write the whole promo!
Congratulations, James!
For those of you who don’t know about the Founder’s Circle, I apologize. This is the highest level of service we’ve ever offered. It was designed for members who have shown that they want to become the best possible copywriter in the shortest amount of time. And so far, it’s been offered only to a select few.
If you haven’t received an invitation to the Founder’s Circle it could be that you are very new to the program … or that you haven’t yet demonstrated the level of commitment that we’re looking for. But if you think you should have gotten an invitation, please send me an email or give me a call, and I’ll make sure you do.
Last week was a good one for Simon P., who used his new copywriting skills to sell his apartment in Amsterdam. But before I share his story, here’s a question from Tom L. about the Direct Response Job Board …
"Hi, Scott. I am well on my way through the Accelerated program in copywriting and feel I am ready to get out there in the marketplace. I’m currently working on my self-promotion and marketing skills, but I could use some advice regarding the Direct Response Jobs website. Are these companies looking for someone to work in-house for them … meaning relocation … or are they looking for freelance writers?
"Likewise and more importantly, when approaching potential clients for freelance work, are they expecting me to be there in person to seal the deal? Or is this normally settled remotely through correspondence, phone calls, and websites? I know if I were on the other end, I would want to meet with the person face-to-face before committing. If so, that’s a major hurdle for me, considering my now full-time work commitment.
"I know my questions may be so basic that the answers are assumed by copywriters who are already out there working. Nevertheless, I could surely use your advice."
Tom, I’m glad to hear that you’re already thinking about how to market yourself.
To answer your first question, yes, some of the jobs posted on www.directresponsejobs.com are for in-house copywriters (which could mean relocation). But some are for freelancers – so you should be able to find plenty of freelance opportunities there. Plus, the fact that a company posts a job on www.directresponsejobs.com at all means that they use copy. So even if they post an assignment for an in-house writer, they might have some freelance work to offer in the future. We allow companies to post jobs for in-house copywriters because, ultimately, it means more job opportunities for our members.
To answer your other question … applying for a freelance copy assignment does NOT require you to meet the potential client in person. I’m sure that there are a few exceptions where they want to meet the writer – but it’s not usually the case. That’s a major benefit of being a freelance copywriter for most of us. You can land your assignments – and see them through from beginning to end – over the phone or through email.
Now, here’s Simon’s story …
"A few months ago, I posted a sales letter on the member forum that I’d written to sell my apartment in Amsterdam. You can see the original thread at:
http://www.awaistudents.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=135&highlight=glicken."Well, today I completed the sale – and I have a couple of things I would like to tell you about it. Why? Because I sold the apartment for about 17,000 euros more than market value – and around 17% above what I paid for it. The sales letter was the killer. After I posted it, I was flooded by people desperate (yes, they couldn’t come to my door fast enough) to view ‘your wonderful apartment.’
"You know, this stuff does work. I’ve seen it for myself now … and it’s helped my bank balance."
Great work, Simon!! And thanks to one and all. Keep those emails coming!
Scott
