Quick Tip: Three Ways to Conquer Writer’s Block

Writer’s block is one of your worst enemies. When it strikes, it is an enormous obstacle to your creativity … not to mention meeting your deadline. It is frustrating – even frightening. But you can get past it.

First, identify the cause of the problem.

Sometimes, the cause is simple. Maybe you’ve simply been working too long and need a break. If that’s the case, go for a walk, stretch, or do some research for another project.

But even if the cause is more serious – if, for example, you’re afraid you’ll fail or won’t measure up - - you can still overcome writer’s block relatively easily.

Start by going through your swipe file. Thoroughly study a dozen or so promotions that catch your eye … whether they’re similar to your product or totally unrelated.

You’re likely to get fresh ideas from them that will detonate your writer’s block: great selling approaches, key words or phrases, or perhaps a format that will inspire breakthrough results.

If that doesn’t do it, try “stream-of-consciousness” writing. Think about your product for a bit. Then write continuously for 10 or 15 minutes. Don’t censor your thoughts. Just write. See how many headlines, subheads, opening sentences – or whatever else it is that you’re stuck on – that you can come up with. The objective is quantity not quality. At the end of that time, go back and see what you’ve got. At least some of what you’ve written should be worth working with.

Once you get a few promising ideas on paper, you’ll be off and running … leaving writer’s block far behind. Guaranteed.
