Quick Tip:
Turn Your Life Into a Powerful Self-Promotional Tool

Fiction writers are told "Write what you know." This advice applies equally well to you when you're prospecting for products and services to write about.

If following the stock market bores or intimidates you but you love cooking, don't try to work for a financial newsletter. Your discomfort will glare through your copy. Instead – since you love cooking – research the many cooking-oriented products available through direct mail. Pitch yourself to the marketing managers of the products that tickle your fancy … or that you've used and fallen in love with.

In fact, products and services that you've used make excellent potential clients. Are you a cyclist passionate about a particular racing bike? Who better to write their copy than you? Do you love a special brand of coffee? Find the name of the marketing director and pitch yourself. You may be the fresh, new voice they long for.

Examine your life. What are your hobbies, passions, and interests? What products do you use frequently? This is where you'll find the most productive – and profitable – areas to promote yourself.
