Get It in Writing: 6 Things You Want to Include When Writing Letters of Agreement

Here's a tip I picked up at last year's bootcamp …

Once you agree to a fee and deadline for a copywriting job, put the terms of your agreement in writing. Ask your client for a purchase order or letter of authorization. Or you can send him/her a letter of agreement.

If you prepare a letter of agreement, it should include the following:

  • a description of the job
  • the deadline, including the time and method of delivery
  • the fee
  • the payment structure (e.g., half up front, the rest when the copy is final)
  • how many revisions are included in that fee
  • a signature line for the client to acknowledge acceptance

Of course, if you know the client well and have a good working relationship, you may not have to be so formal. Let your gut be your guide.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Last year's bootcamp did a lot for my copywriting career. I have more clients than I can handle and thanks to last year's program I also know how to deal with them. I highly recommend attending if you want to make this career pay off for you. In fact, I'm going to go again this year so I hope to see you there. Keep watching for more details in upcoming issues of The Golden Thread.]
