Quick Tip: Marketing Yourself

Copywriting member Kammy Thurman believes in making her own opportunities. Here's a resourceful technique she used to find work. Maybe it will work for you:

"I saw an Internet ad for a technical position in a company I used to purchase graphics CDs from. The actual job posting was completely different from what I do. But I e-mailed a cover letter explaining the ad I'd seen and my desire to write for this company. I also sent my resume and a couple of samples. It just so happened, a writer had just left the company. My resume and samples "happened along" at the right moment, and I stepped into the job. Now I'm a monthly contributing writer of freelance articles on newsletter production and design for two of the company's publications. In addition toprompt, good pay, I get free graphics CDs that I can use for newsletters I produce for other clients. I love working with this company. My next move will be to contact the marketing director about writing advertisements for them.

"This experience taught me that even if a writing opportunity seems unlikely, go for it anyway. You never know what might be happening on the inside at that moment, and the doors it could open for you."
