7 Habits Successful Copywriters Use to Keep Clients Happy
There is no set format for dealing with clients but following these rules will certainly increase your chances of success…
- Be concise – keep your correspondence brief and to the point. Don’t get off topic.
- Address the client by name. If you’re unsure, phone the company, then ask who the marketing person in charge of their direct mail efforts is. “Dear Editor” is only to be used as a last resort. After that, most writers address their client’s by their first name, but on initial contact you should probably use Ms. or Mr. So-and-So.
- Be specific. Most clients have multiple products and services. Tell them exactly what you’re writing for and what you want them to do with what you’re sending them.
- State your idea clearly – and in such a way that you show the benefits for the reader.
- Don’t be shy. If you have expert knowledge of a subject – say so.
- Never be apologetic or stress your lack of experience. You’re a freelance copywriter, not a “novice writer.”
- If you’ve already had a promotion in the mail, tell them. If you have samples, send them. (3 at most – and obviously choose the most prestigious.) The fact that another client has mailed your work gives you status and credibility.
