- Use direct mail to generate new business leads. A successful mailing of only 100 letters can often yield five to 10 highly qualified new prospects.
- Advertise your services in magazines aimed at advertising professionals. Try a variety of journals and different ads until you find which ones give the best results. Also, try both classified and display formats.
- Network. Don't be a recluse – be social. Attend meetings, seminars, and luncheons. Volunteer to work on committees. Become visible in the advertising community.
- When you're just starting out as a freelancer – or in slow periods later on – you need to spend 80 to 100 percent of your time on things that will generate income or on marketing. One query sent out or one follow-up call per day, at least, is a good goal – and a minimum if you have no assignments.
