"You'll never believe what happened to me! Our company's president, senior project manager, my boss, and two other people who represent 'the customer' called me into the conference room for a meeting in front of my co-workers. I thought for a moment that something was wrong. Then I was asked to stand up … and they publicly congratulated me for producing (as they put it) 'a professionally written and expertly prepared' 17-lesson training guide and 127-page operators manual for the company.
"The company president stated that if they had hired an outside technical writer for this project, it would have cost them a lot of money (at which point I was tempted to ask for a pay raise, but didn't) – and then they surprised me by giving me a cash bonus … right in front of everybody. (Needless to say, my wife was VERY happy when I came home with the money!)
"They asked me how I had learned to produce such quality work without a college degree. I reminded them that I had mentioned many times that I love to write and have been working on a professional copywriting course for about a year.
"I was congratulated and shook hands with everyone. Then they surprised me again by giving me the new title of 'technical writer.' (Later, my boss told me that I am the best writer the company has had in years.)
"I am now working on a new user manual for a software program because (they tell me) the technical writers the company used to employ can't seem to write material geared for their readers.
"And that's not all …
"The company's business development office manager asked to see me. She told me about a new concept that the company is trying to sell. Then she gave me some literature and sent me back to my office to produce a sales letter in the form of a proposal – by the close of business that day. Talk about being put on the spot!
"Needless to say, I worked like hell ('as if a gun had been put to my head,' as Mr. Masterson teaches) – but LOVING EVERY DAMN MINUTE OF IT!
"When I delivered the sales letter, she looked at it, then looked at me and said, 'I want you to start writing for me. I'm going to talk to your boss and have you work on some proposals and selling contracts.'
"Then she said, 'Mr. Kidd, I see your potential and I know I can work with you. You understand our needs – and I see a passion in your eyes about your work.'
"Needless to say, she made my day!
"When you really enjoy doing something and people see the 'passion in your eyes' when you talk about it – they don't waste any time putting you to work. It seems as though 'the man upstairs' (if you will) is opening up doors for me.
"GOD I LOVE THIS WRITING BUSINESS!"
